On Tuesday, Worldcoin (WLD), a cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, was officially launched. The main goal of this project is to revolutionize the digital identification process by providing users with a World ID that verifies their status as real humans.

The cryptocurrency has gained significant attention on social media, particularly Twitter, where it’s being discussed as a potentially “dystopian” concept. Created by the AI entrepreneur, Worldcoin offers digital coins to individuals in exchange for scanning their eyeballs.

The project’s full launch saw crowds of people from various locations around the world lining up to participate by gazing into silver orbs.

Worldcoin operates as a decentralized open source protocol, backed by a global community of developers, economists, and technologists, all working towards enhancing participation in and access to the global digital economy.

Initiated more than three years ago, the project’s ultimate ambition is to establish a new identity and financial network owned collectively by everyone.

According to the founder, Worldcoin’s potential impacts include significantly increasing economic opportunities, implementing a reliable method for distinguishing humans from AI online while safeguarding privacy, facilitating global democratic processes, and potentially leading to a path where AI could fund universal basic income (UBI) initiatives.
